THE PRACTICAL EDIT / HOME & LIVING
BUYING GUIDE • DEHUMIDIFIERS
Do you need a dehumidifier at home?
A practical guide to basement and crawl-space humidity—plus a side-by-side look at Argendon models for different room sizes and drainage needs.
Compare the models ↓Research-based guide using manufacturer-published specifications. Buy Better Finds has selected the Sandidry Pro 35C for upcoming hands-on testing but has not yet completed that review.

A damp basement, musty crawl space or persistently humid utility area can make a home uncomfortable and can create conditions where mold and mildew are more likely to develop. A dehumidifier can help control airborne moisture, but it should not be treated as a substitute for repairing leaks, drainage problems or other sources of water intrusion.
Signs a dehumidifier may help
How to choose the right size
Start with square footage, but don't stop there. Consider how damp the space is, room temperature, airflow and where the collected water will drain. A larger or wetter basement can require more moisture-removal capacity than a similarly sized conditioned room.

The Sandidry Pro 35C sits in an interesting spot for residential testing: Argendon lists it for spaces up to 1,000 square feet, with 35-pint AHAM removal, 70-pint saturation capacity, gravity drainage and a built-in condensate pump. The pump is particularly useful to evaluate in a real basement because it gives homeowners more flexibility when a convenient floor drain is not available.
Buy Better Finds has selected this model for an upcoming hands-on home evaluation. Once the unit arrives and testing is complete, we'll add original photographs and measured observations covering setup, humidity changes, operating noise, controls, drainage and day-to-day usability. Until then, we are treating all performance information on this page as manufacturer specifications—not our test results.
Features worth paying attention to
Drainage
Continuous gravity drainage is simple when a suitable lower drain is nearby. A condensate pump can provide more placement flexibility.
Humidity controls
Look for controls that let you choose and maintain an appropriate target instead of running continuously when it isn't necessary.
Auto defrost
This can matter in cooler basements and crawl spaces where frost can form on a dehumidifier's coils.
Maintenance
Check filter access, hose routing, clearance requirements and the manufacturer's recommended cleaning schedule before buying.
Which Argendon model should you start with?
For a smaller basement or crawl space, the Shield 35M is the lower-priced starting point in this comparison. The Sandidry Pro 35C adds a built-in pump at the same published 35-pint AHAM capacity. The Sandidry 55C steps up to 55 pints AHAM and 1,300 square feet, while the Shield 60 and Sandidry Elite 60C move to 60-pint AHAM capacity for larger or more demanding spaces.
Don't buy on the biggest saturation number alone. Match the unit to the actual space, moisture conditions, drainage setup and manufacturer installation guidance.
